When you shop for a motorcycle there are a lot of factors to consider! If you’ve never purchased a motorcycle it can be especially difficult to know what to look for. One factor that is often overlooked is the amount of ground clearance available. Continue reading to learn more about ground clearance and determine how much you need!

What is Ground Clearance?

Before you shop for the right amount of clearance, it’s helpful to understand what it is. Ground clearance is the space between the underside of the motorcycle chassis and the surface below. It is typically measured in millimeters and different styles of bike will have different amounts of clearance.

Choosing High Ground Clearance

Some motorcycles come with a higher amount of ground clearance than others, such as dirt bikes or adventure bikes. Having more ground clearance reduces the chance of damage caused by making contact with the surface below. For example, if you encounter an obstacle like a bump on a trail, having more ground clearance can help you go over that obstacle safely and without damaging your vehicle.

Higher ground clearance also makes the suspension system feel less harsh, making the ride smooth.

Choosing Low Ground Clearance

On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are motorcycles with low ground clearance, such as cruisers or touring bikes. A lower clearance offers a lower center of gravity, which makes the bike easier to handle and allows the rider better balance. The decreased amount of space between the bike and the road also means there will be less air passing underneath the vehicle, giving better aerodynamics during the ride.

Can You Change the Amount of Clearance?

Although each motorcycle is designed with a specific amount of ground clearance, it is possible to alter this feature. However, there can be disadvantages to changing the natural clearance of a motorcycle. Before any alterations are made, you should consult an experienced mechanic to determine if your desires can safely be met. It might be better to purchase a bike that already has the customizations you want.

What Amount is Right for You?

There are a few different things to consider when you select the right amount of ground clearance. Most importantly, you should understand your riding style and make your decision based on those preferences. For example, if you intend to go on a lot of road trips, you may want a lower ground clearance.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Your height. It’s important that you can place your feet on the ground, so your height can influence how much ground clearance you need.
  2. Your experience. Your skill level can also play a role in the amount of clearance you choose because handling will be important for newer riders.
  3. Your riding location. If you intend to enjoy off-road adventures, you may need a bike with more clearance.
